We take an 11 hour bus trip from Cusco, we stop briefly in Ninamarca (4,200 m/14,000 ft) to see a pre-Inca cemetery and Paucartambo village. We then descend the eastern slopes of the Andes through a cloud forest with lush vegetation to the lowland rainforest on the Madre de Dios River and Manu River. You will enjoy spectacular views of the Andes and may see wildlife such as our national bird, brilliantly colored tanagers, hummingbirds, and maybe even the wooly monkey. Our first night is spent in a lodge in San Pedro.

After breakfast we hike 90 minutes to Atalaya (500 m/1,640 ft). From Atalaya we take a motorized canoe down the Alto Madre de Dios River for eight hours. Today you will have the opportunity to see wildlife along the rocky banks of the rivers, such as the tiger heron, purplish jays, king vultures, and some of the 13 species of monkeys that live in Manu. In the late afternoon we arrive at Blanquillo where we spend the night in a lodge. This night you have the option to take a guided walk before dinner to see more nocturnal creatures such as insects, frogs, and snakes.

Day 3: Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick – Maquisapayoj
Early in the morning we go to the macaw clay lick to watch flocks of parakeets, parrots and macaws arriveto eat clay. After the spectacle we pack all of our belongings and travel 45 minutes upstream to Maquisapayoj. In Maquisapayoj we sleep on a platform equipped with mosquito nets. Our camp is close to the mammal salt lick and from here we can observe tapirs and other mammals at night.

Day 4: Maquisapayoj – Albergue Matisguenka
We travel nine hours upstream into Manu National Park. The wildlife along the banks of the Manu River is diverse. White caymans, fish, turtles, and plenty of colourful birds can be seen on this voyage. There is also a chance seeing larger animals such as capybaras, tapirs, and jaguars. In the afternoon we arrive at Matsiguenka, where we spend the night in a lodge.

Day 5: Exploring Cocha Salvador
Today we leave early for a day trip to explore Lake Salvador via catamaran. On our exploration, we will be able to spot giant river otters, caymans, hoatzins, and monkeys.
